Want to learn how to fill a piping bag with buttercream frosting like a pro? I’m about to show you how!
If you’ve ever wanted to decorate a cake for your family, for birthdays, parties, etc. then you need to learn how to fill a piping bag. Piping beautiful borders, writing with buttercream or creating spectacular buttercream roses require the use of a piping bag and a decorating tip.
You’ll need some frosting to fill the bag, so check out my melt in your mouth Vanilla Buttercream Frosting and Chocolate Buttercream Frosting recipes.
Anyway back to this post…..In this post, I explain how to fill a piping bag easily and give you tips I’ve learned along my cake decorating journey.
And what’s really cool is you can buy the bags and tips at your nearest Walmart or grocery stores who carry cake decorating supplies. So, go ahead and get your decorating on!
Steps
1
Done
|
Open the piping bag and push the piping tip down to the end of the bag. |
2
Done
|
Take the scissors place them just above the end of the piping tip where you want to cut it, then squeeze the scissors just hard enough to leave a groove mark in the bag. This way you know where to cut later. You don’t want to cut off too much or your tip could be pushed out while you’re piping the frosting. |
3
Done
|
Push the piping tip away from the end of the bag and cut the tip of the bag off where you marked it. |
4
Done
|
Push the piping tip back to the end of the bag. |
5
Done
|
Open the piping bag and set it in a tall drinking glass. Fold the bag over the edges of the glass. |
6
Done
|
Use a spatula to scoop the buttercream into the bag. Fill the bag to about two thirds full. |
7
Done
|
Remove the bag from the glass, hold the top of the bag then push the buttercream down toward the tip. Press on the frosting while pushing it down to get rid of any air pockets in the frosting. If you don’t you will end up with blowouts while you’re piping your frosting. |

Starting at the open end of the bag, push the frosting down to the end of the bag. Twist the bag closed until the frosting starts to come out of the piping tip. Wrap a rubber band around the top of the bag to secure it shut. And now you’re ready to get your decorating on! Pipe your buttercream on your favorite cupcakes or cake! Remember, I want you to get it right the first time, so if you need help let me know by leaving a comment! |
